The theme of the 2021 International Day for Biological Diversity is “We’re part of the solution #ForNature”. This theme emphasizes how we can become powerful backers of active changes for mankind and the Earth. Biodiversity is the key and foundation for solving problems related to climate change, health, food and water safety, and sustainability issues. The diminishing or disappearance of a species can bring hard-to-see or intangible effects. Greater impacts include the destruction of habitats, food chains, and entire ecosystems.
The Foundation is focused on biodiversity. Starting in 2010, we sponsored the Shuanglianpi Eco Classroom, together with the Society of Wilderness. The classroom is based on the ideas of a “wetlands school” and implements long-term habitat conservation and environmental education. In 2020, the classroom successfully protected 17 important plant species in Shuanglianpi and found 3 important plant germplasms: Cyperus platystylis, pondweed, and Eriocaulaceae. The classroom strives to restore the former glory of Shuanglianpi and protect the wetlands.
