Background

Aired on the National Geographic Channel in 2015, Terraced Fields took two years to film and produce. The film documents an entire year of work of the farmers in the Gongliao terraced fields according to the 24 solar terms, as well as the rich and diverse ecology around the water terraces. The parts of this film that focus on ecology of animals used 4K ultra-high definition photography to achieve the best presentation effect. Also, for the first time, a hidden camera was used to capture the vivid scene of blue magpie chicks breaking out of their shells from a special angle. To obtain this precious footage, the director spent three months with the blue magpie family. Since blue magpies are very territorial, especially when nesting, the director was attacked several times and pecked many times. But the hard work pays off. In this film, the process of building a nest, laying eggs, breaking the shell, and learning to fly is presented in its entirety. In addition, to document the magnificent beauty of the terraced fields, the director also used a drone to take aerial shots of the fields at different times of the year.

Supported by the Foundation, the Terraced Fields documentary records the stepped fields and traditional agricultural methods of the Hsiao family, from generation to generation. The family uses the natural rhythms of the 24 solar terms and traditional methods without pesticides to protect many rare species in Taiwan and provide a habitat for them to thrive, showcasing the possible harmony between man and nature.

This film received the Gold Award for "Documentaries under 60 minutes" at the 49th WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival and the Environmental Protection Award at the 12th World Nature & Wildlife Film Festival.
