Background

The natural floating island is composed of plants, including the Gramineae, shrubs, ferns, and even arbors. It takes at least 500 years to form a floating island. Only Taiwan and German have this scenic lake, and the only natural floating island in Taiwan is Shuanglianpi located in Yilan County’s Yuanshan Township.

There are more than 300 types of aquatic plants in Taiwan, and there are up to 112 aquatic plants in Shuanglianpi, 90 of which are from Taiwan. Shuanglianpi has one-third of aquatic plants, 58 aquatic insects, and 90 terrestrial insects. By area size and species ratio, the richness of species in Shuanglianpi is ranked at the top in the world's wetlands. This makes Shuanglianpi the best location for environmental education.

Unfortunately, the lake ecosystem in Shuanglianpi changed drastically compared to 1995 with numerous damages. Aquatic plants used to be everywhere, and the water area used to be wider and deeper. In the past, the slope between the land and the lake was mild. Right now, it is a steep slope. The most common species in the lake now, grass carps, chubs, and tilapias could not be seen in the past. These changes have shown that the wetland is severely damaged.

To restore this precious wetland, Wistron Foundation has collaborated with The Society of Wilderness since 2010 to create the Shuanglianpi Educational and Habitat Preservation Base. With a “Wetland School” in mind, habitat preservation and environmental education have been carried on continuously.

Our determination to protect Shuanglianpi has not changed since 2010. We find more we can do as we know more about it.

Shuanglianpi ecosystem survey and research: Shuanglianpi ecosystem survey, data collection, expert meeting and seminar.

Habitat protection: Habitat and species protection, micro-habitat creation, exotic species elimination, and various preservation works.

Advancement and promotion of environmental education: Regularly conduct outings, work vacation, preservation, volunteer training, theme activities, and promotions.

Environmentally-friendly agriculture promotion through social media: We advocate environmentally-friendly agriculture to reduce the pollution of pesticides and fertilizer to lands and water. Environmentally-friendly agriculture is organic agriculture conducted by farmers who have signed a contract. The area of organic agriculture becomes bigger year after year, and the crops are given to the vulnerable groups. Wistron Foundation also continues to foster the collaboration between the Society of Wilderness family groups and farmers to reach reciprocity.

Since 2016, volunteers from Wistron Group have joined the habitat preservation works, allowing employees to understand the precious wetland resources and have hands-on practices.

Shuanglianpi is surrounded by mountains, creating the calm and rustic atmosphere. Being there is like living in a secluded paradise. The natural floating island is a gigantic and beautiful garden, floating on the ocean. With the dedication spanning a century and the love spanning a millennium, we are working together to protect a bright future for Shuanglianpi.

To better convey the environmental education concept of protecting wetlands, Wistron Foundation and the Future Parenting platform have collaborated to produce a picture book about the stories of Shuanglianpi, “The Pond of Childhood”. It has been officially published and launched in January 2022. We invite you to page through the e-book online and enjoy the natural environment and touching stories of Shuanglianpi with your children.
