Achievements | Awaiting the Season of Migratory Birds

Background

Wistron's Wuweigang Environmental Base is located at the southernmost tip of the coastline in Suao Township, Yilan County. East of this base is a vast area of hundreds of hectares of swamps and wetlands, which were originally a river located southeast of Lanyang Plain, but silt deposits in the estuary created an expanse of coastal marsh, thus forming a tail-less (wuwei) harbor as its name Wuweigang suggests. The newly formed wetland became an ideal habitat for winter migratory birds, and in 1993, it officially became Taiwan's first protected refuge for waterbirds.

Our nature environmental education base is surrounded by Wuweigang communities, schools, and the Wuweigang Waterbird Refuge. In 2021, the Foundation adopted the operation of the Wuweigang Environmental Base. We hope to use this base as the hub for encouraging experts and scholars who have a deep concern for wetland ecosystems to work with local private organizations and associations, forge relationships with local residents in public activities, and discover local cultural characteristics and ecologically diverse resources.

The Foundation continued to collaborate with Yueming Elementary School on collaborative education, and worked with Bat Conservation Society of Taipei and Yilan County Animal Shelter on sheltering and caring for bats and injured birds. In addition, we organized a series of ecology/humanity-themed activities, immersive experience camping activities, and environmental education outdoor field trips, so that there are still landscapes and sceneries in community-based ecological conservation areas to appreciate even during non-bird migration seasons.

Migratory birds pass through and rest in Wuweigang every year in November during autumn, as bird viewers flock to the area to watch the flocks of ducks fly across the sky, while listening to volunteers giving informative details. Migratory birds flying southward creates such a touching scene that moves us to vow to protect and preserve their home as we await their return during warmer seasons.
