Achievements | Assisting students to study and turn their future around through education

Background

There are still many children from rural areas and underprivileged families in Taiwan who face hardships during their development and whose future is limited by poverty. According to surveys, most children from underprivileged families usually do not perform well relating to their schoolwork, which leads to a lack of competitiveness when they grow up, which also causes wealth disparity problems in the country to become increasingly more serious. We believe that bridging the educational gap is the best opportunity to help these children, so that a good future lies ahead of them and they wouldn’t fall behind right from starting line.

Since 2012, the Wistron Foundation has taken action by being a long-term sponsor of the "After-school schoolwork counseling for Disadvantaged Children in rural areas" program supported the Boyo Social Welfare Foundation. We thank our founder, Principal Chia-Tung, Lee and our current chairman of the board, Principal Chuan-Yi Tang for leading the Boyo Social Welfare Foundation with the core concept of "don’t let poor children fall into perpetual poverty." Free counseling for schoolwork, remedial teaching materials, and social work care services are provided to disadvantaged children in rural areas of Taiwan, with the hope to help disadvantaged children in rural areas to cast off poverty through education. This program provides 210 days of counseling a year, two to three hours per day, from elementary school to junior high school and continues to assist children in high school, college, and even in the early stages of their careers. Each year, 3,000 children’s basic skills are advanced to make them more competitive when they enter the workforce.

"Accompaniment” is the demonstration of our plan to turn the future around with education and with caring action, in the spirit of local service and contribution. In 2013 the Foundation began cooperation with the Kaorong Church’s "After-school Care for Disadvantaged Children" program in Xizhi district. The church has been working with children from disadvantaged families in the Xizhi district for a long time and is still doing so to provide them with a safe and comfortable environment to study after school as well as helping them through the critical developmental period. However, as the number of students grows and secondary schoolwork becomes more difficult, there is a serious shortage of parents and community volunteers to assist with schoolwork counseling.

In order to help Kaorong Church, Wistron foundation initiated an activity for Wistron volunteers to go to the church to accompany the students and spend their own time after work or on holidays to help the students complete their schoolwork and remedial studies. We look forward to enabling this group of disadvantaged students to start being able to keep up with the pace of their peers, develop personal self-confidence, and thus gain more opportunities for learning and development with continuous schoolwork counseling. Up to 2015, 87 Wistron volunteers have been recruited to participate in the program, with an accumulated service time of 3,500 hours.

Knowledge is power and education is the future. We will never stop caring for the underprivileged children in remote areas, helping them to have the opportunity to realize their dreams and have hope because the future of children is the future of Taiwan.

Outcome

2022There are a total of 17 tutoring centers across Taiwan, with 2,360 students benefiting from local teacher training and education initiatives throughout the year. These efforts aim to enhance children's life skills and academic learning abilities.

2021Boyo Social Welfare Foundation has established 17 schoolwork counseling centers with 2,490 students who are trained by local teachers and immersed in education to enhance children's life and academic learning skills. Boyo Social Welfare Foundation made good use of social resources and cross-disciplinary cooperation to provide support and companionship for children from disadvantaged families. Because of the epidemic, the digital gap between rural and urban areas and between the rich and the poor has been highlighted even more. Seventy percent of the tutorials do not have digital equipment, so Boyo Social Welfare Foundation prepared a special "learning kit after the pandemic" for children to extend learning to their homes. A total of 39 children have benefited from the after-school support, life education, and schoolwork counseling provided by Kaorong Church's "After-school care for Disadvantaged Children" program.

2020Boyo Social Welfare Foundation has made it to 17 schoolwork counseling centers with 2,500 students, providing support and companionship for children from disadvantaged families to enhance their life and academic learning abilities. A total of 42 children have benefited from the after-school support, life education, and schoolwork counseling provided by Kaorong Church's "After-school care for Disadvantaged Children" program.

2019A total of 45 children have benefited from the after-school support provided by Kaorong Church. We believe this long-term companionship extends to the interaction and caring within the children’s immediate and extended family members, providing timely guidance to help families cope with crises and adjust to life, allowing the family to function better and also form a support system.

2012-2019Eighteen schoolwork counseling centers and 2,200 children are equipped with basic academic skills through the guidance and companionship of 430 local schoolwork counseling teachers. After graduation, Boyo Social Welfare Foundation will continue to check up on the students and care for them as they enter the next stage of their lives with continuous assistance and care, so that children from disadvantaged families will have more confidence and self-reliance to improve themselves and their families.
