National Geographic Taiwan Photography Contest

Submissions for the 2022 National Geographic Taiwan Photography Contest have begun! National Geographic photographs have always been the benchmark in the world of photography. In order to encourage the photography enthusiasts to approach the beauty of Taiwan from every possible angle, the submitted works must be shot in Taiwan. In the different submission groups, besides the existing themes of people, places, and nature, a new theme of ecological sustainability has been added. The photographers can use their cameras to capture the care for ecological sustainability and inspire reporting by other media channels. Submissions are welcome from now to March 18. The National Geographic Photography Contest is a global event held by National Geographic. Through submissions, photography seminars, exhibitions, and publications, the contest aims to encourage photography enthusiasts to capture heart-warming images from the perspective and spirit of National Geographic. From 2015 to 2019, the event was held in Taiwan for five consecutive years, with nearly 40,000 members participating in related events, and attracting 10,000 participants with 26,000 photos of the nature, culture, and places in Taiwan. Teenagers are also encouraged to participate to find the next generation of skilled photographers.

This year's competition is divided into the adult group and teenager group. To enter the first group, you must be over 20 years old. Each person may choose to participate in four themes, but each person is limited to submit one work per theme, and the same work can only be submitted to one theme. The adult group has four major themes, which are people, places, nature, and ecological sustainability. The teenager group, which is to inspire photography enthusiasts under the age of 20 to develop their passion for exploring Taiwan, has no set theme and each person can submit up to three works.

In order to use the photography to raise awareness of ecological sustainability, the theme of ecological sustainability has been specifically established this year ― with five photos forming a set of works to describe the stories of “animal and plant conservation,” “water-based, land-based, and wetlands ecology,” “ocean conservation,” or “climate change.” The winner of this year's ecological sustainability theme will not only receive rewards and prize money, they will also have the chance to receive personalized instructions on ecological conservation photography from Taiwanese ecological documentary director, Ke Jing-Yuan, and record the progress through short videos or text. The results will be published in the 2022 National Geographic Taiwan Photography Contest Special Edition.

The main sponsor of the event, Wistron Foundation, is committed to the improvement of the balance and harmony between man and nature. Wistron Foundation invests large amounts of effort to protect the environment and ecology and improve cultural values. Since 2006, we have focused on the ecology and environment in Taiwan. The Foundation has established long-term partnerships with social welfare and ecological conservation groups, including Fuyang Eco Park in Taipei City, Shuanglianpi in Yilan County, and Longci District in Tainan City. The hope for this photography contest is to lead the people of Taiwan into a discussion of ecological sustainability.
