Little Grebes Signal Success After 10-Year Absence

On the eve of Mother’s Day in May, Moon Pond at Guandu Nature Park—a wetland jointly restored by the Foundation and the Wild Bird Society of Taipei—welcomed the breeding of little grebes for the first time in a decade, as the waterbirds laid eggs and raised their chicks. Shortly after, in mid-June, the Wild Bird Society of Taipei was awarded the Top Excellence Award in the group category at the 10th National Environmental Education Awards, the highest honor in Taiwan’s environmental education sector. These back-to-back achievements brought the organization two major milestones in less than two months.

According to tracking records, the last time successful chick-rearing occurred at Moon Pond was back in 2015. Although little grebes continued to visit over the subsequent years, none managed to breed successfully. Since taking over the stewardship of Moon Pond in 2022, the Wistron Foundation has actively mobilized volunteers from Wistron Volunteer to enhance the habitat. After years of dedicated effort, this body of water finally won back the favor of a mother little grebe, who was recently seen safely navigating the waters with her adorable, fluffy little chicks swimming contentedly beside her—a deeply moving milestone for the restoration project.

Since 2022, the Wistron Foundation has partnered with the Wild Bird Society of Taipei to support three major initiatives: the stewardship of Moon Pond, waterbird breeding habitat conservation, and the adoption of educational farmlands. These efforts have encompassed freshwater fish species restoration, the renovation of Birdwatching Cabin No. 2, the setup of an ecological tank at Moon Pond, the acquisition of a tractor, and support for wetland field trips for schools in remote or underserved areas as well as groups with special needs. With its fully enhanced physical infrastructure and educational programs, Guandu Nature Park served as the host site for the final evaluation during the National Environmental Education Awards, ultimately helping propel the Wild Bird Society of Taipei to secure the Top Excellence Award in the group category at the 10th edition of the awards.

Looking ahead, the Foundation will continue to work hand-in-hand with the Wild Bird Society of Taipei to manage Guandu Nature Park, steadfastly striving toward the shared vision of an urban sanctuary for waterbirds.
