Since 2021, Wistron Foundation has supported the Grass Mountain Raptor Center in its development, as well as in raptor rescue, rehabilitation and release, pathological examinations, and environmental education initiatives. Having amassed an extensive body of field survey and research data, the Raptor Research Group of Taiwan (RRGT) organizes dedicated exhibitions each year to offer the public deeper insights into raptor ecology and the latest scientific findings.
The Grass Mountain Raptor Center proudly presents its first special exhibition of 2025, Majesty Unveiled.
Featuring raptors soaring across the skies and commanding the earth below, the exhibition captures the grandeur of these lords of the sky. Through a rich collection of historical records, it retraces the journey from early discoveries to a renewed unveiling of their majesty—bringing timeless images of raptors back to light, echoing an enduring emotion unchanged by time.
Around the mouth of the Tamsui River over 160 years ago, seeing five ospreys in the sky and a pair of common kestrels perched atop the Dutch fort (Fort San Domingo) was not an uncommon sight. A century ago, the black kite population around Yuchi in Nantou was stable and frequently collected as specimens. Both besra sparrowhawks and crested goshawks were found near the port of Hualien. Looking back from today, these historical encounters with Taiwan’s raptors seem both familiar and strangely distant.
Unraveling Discoveries and Decoding Raptors
The Majesty Unveiled exhibition invites visitors to retrace the history of raptor discovery — from the collections of 19th-century Western naturalists, to the systematic surveys conducted during the Japanese colonial period, and finally to the rise of modern birdwatching movements among the public. It reveals how these "kings of birds" evolved from distant silhouettes in the sky to treasured research specimens, becoming an integral part of scientific knowledge.
The exhibition also showcases raptor wings, skulls, talons, and feathers. These intricate details invite visitors to observe and compare like scientists, experiencing the process of species classification and discovery firsthand. Through careful observation and meticulous documentation, Majesty Unveiled encourages visitors to once again witness the awe-inspiring majesty of raptors — to see the birds, to see Taiwan, and to embrace the enduring spirit of exploration across time and nature.
