Achievements | Planting a Green Seed in the Hearts of All Children

Background

In order to maximize its effectiveness, the concept of environmental conservation must be established at a very young age; therefore, striking the note of environmental education in the young generation is the core concern of the Foundation. For this reason, we wished to plant a green seed in children's hearts to inspire them to play in nature’s embrace and further explore its mysteries as well as feel the pulse of life. Through rich and frequent interactions with nature, children learn how to get along with nature in harmony and soar under the blue sky with joy.

Since 2004, Wistron Foundation has sponsored the Experience Nature Camp for Children which is held by the Wilderness Society for disadvantaged families. The camp is a single-day or multi-day camp for children and conducted by all the branches of the Wilderness Society throughout Taiwan in cooperation with local child welfare organizations, school units, and social welfare organizations such as associations for the physically and mentally challenged, including Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Chiayi, Yunlin, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Hualien, and Yilan.

With the launch of environmental education activities, the Experience Nature Camp for Children affects the senses of all who attend and allows the children to cultivate both their imagination and creativity through the experiences of nature, this also conveys the deeper meaning of protecting life, environmental protection, and habitat conservation.

After the hit of Typhoon Morakot, which caused the 8th of August disaster, we provided special care for those children who were from areas struck by the disaster. Since then, in addition to the Experience Nature Camp for Children, we have also launched a long-term children's companionship program, hoping to provide support and care for children through long-term companionship. For the same group of children, we have consecutively arranged different nature courses as well as experiential activities, which have been integrated into the wilderness observation sites and timely matched with the annual activities of the foundation. Via the practical experience of caring for the environment together, the children will be able to take the initiative to care for themselves, respect life around them, and protect the environment. The ultimate goal of the camp is to be able to move towards "long-term service in local and deepen children's nature education."

In 2017, the project Little Seed Protector started with local care as the core of the project. Each group of children is led to explore, discover, and appreciate the beauty of nature around them by adopting three major directions: local walking and reading, observing and recording, and environmental action at designated sites. Additionally, the children are guided to explore and learn observation and investigation, cultivating children's recognition of their local values, nurturing feelings for local care, and thinking about environmental issues.

In 2020, in addition to the previous program for the children’s camp, we also offered the Seed Nurturing Camp. The camp is an opening for children who are interested in nature after years of dedication as well as a long period of observation and accompaniment by the Wistron Foundation and the Society of Wilderness. This is done via a more refined and professional curriculum. Children will be guided to learn more and have more opportunities for direct contact with nature, and even have the opportunity to cultivate their own seeds of talent for environmental education.

After planting a green seed in children's heart and letting them soar under the blue sky with joy, we are convinced that our hopes and wishes for nature will come true one day.

Outcome

2021The Butterfly Camp in Chiayi took climate change as its theme and added the understanding of our carbon footprint to direct children to take carbon reduction actions. The Wulai Flying Squirrel Camp in Taipei carried out the outdoor observation activity of Tamsui River Basin's nature environment to guide children to explore a more detailed observation of the outdoors. A total of 314 children and volunteers participated in this camp.

2020The Rolling Camp in Hsinchu had the topic of "Food and Farming Education-Living with the Solar Period." Moreover, the Special Care Group in Hsinchu provided underprivileged children and children with behavioral issues with different stimulation and life experiences in the natural environment through companionship and inspiration. The Butterfly Camp in Chiayi used problem identification, problem solving and action implementation to share what they learned with others in the end. The Wulai Flying Squirrel Camp in Taipei designed courses based on the Tamsui River Basin becoming a hinterland for environmental actions. The Flying Bird Group in Taipei used the implementation of energy saving and carbon reduction living habits as their topic. The Human Science Seed Breeding Camp provided more nature experiences and learning opportunities for children with potential to cultivate talents for the seeds of environmental education.

2019The Rolling Camp in Hsinchu used “Zhudong Ditch — My City, My Home, Water and Life" as its theme; the Butterfly Camp in Chiayi used "Green Living Ecology, Shianghu" as its theme; and the Phoenix Group in Tainan used the "Summer Camp — The Son of the Ocean" as its design idea to get children closer to the ocean, being not only educational but entertaining as well.

2018The annual theme of the Rolling Camp in Hsinchu was "My City, My Home" and the Butterfly Camp in Chiayi was "Ecological Shianghu, My Home." From 2004 to 2018, the groups have led more than 10,850 participants from economically disadvantaged families or children from social welfare organizations.

2017Using designated sites, Zhudong Canal Watershed was used by the Rolling Camp in Hsinchu, Erlun Nature Trail was used by the Flying Cloud Group in Yunlin, and Shianghu Park was used by the Butterfly Camp in Chiayi to lead children to conduct ecological observations with a three-stage ability process of observation, investigation, and protection to cultivate little environmental seeds.

2016The Children's Camp’s Little Seed Protector environmental education program was a seven-session program designed to lead children to explore, discover, and appreciate the beauty of nature and humanity around them. In addition the camp leads children to improve the environment by taking action as well as develop the capacity of caring for the community and the need to act. A total of 680 people participated.

2011-2015By combining the resources of all the branches of the Wilderness Society throughout Taiwan, the program has led to the participation of more than 9,200 children from socially disadvantaged families since 2004.

2010Ten times per year all the branches of the Wilderness Society throughout Taiwan have been organizing children's camps in eight counties and cities, caring for the children in the disaster areas after the hit of Typhoon Morakot, which caused the 8th of August disaster in 2009.
