Background

Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above is the first aerial documentary film in Taiwan's film history. Premiered in 2013, it was produced by Hou Hsiao-hsien, narrated by Wu Nien-Jen, scored by Ricky Ho, and directed by Chi Po-lin. Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above is a film that director Chi Po-lin has dreamed of for over 20 years. The film took Chi Po-lin three years in the air to complete and is the first aerial documentary film in Taiwan's film history. The film uses a bird's-eye view to capture the beauty and scars on this land for the people of Taiwan, giving them a view close to God's. The film uses natural scenes one after another to show the audience the land, our home, Taiwan. It urged us to reflect further on the various issues occurring on this piece of land. The film portrays deep environmental reflection and social education, leading it to win the Best Documentary Film Award at the 50th Golden Horse Awards. The film also received the Special Jury Award for Feature-Length Documentary and Gold Medal Award for Cinematography at the 47th Houston International Film Festival

Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above is a film that director Chi Po-lin has dreamed of for over 20 years and took him three years in the air to complete. With the difficult aerial photography technique, the beauty and scars of this land are recorded for the people in Taiwan, presenting to the audience another view of our island with a face and height never seen before.

Director Chi Po-lin shared his experience saying, "Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above is a dream I have wanted to accomplish for many years. Still, I encountered so many difficulties and challenges along the way that I thought about giving up several times.
In the beginning, I had to mortgage my house to finance the purchase of aerial cameras. Next, flying the helicopter to high altitudes, we often encountered weather changes, flight hazards, and funding challenges. In addition to designing the content for filming, everything needed everyone's cooperation, including nature herself. I want to thank everyone who was there and everyone who helped make Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above possible. My biggest wish and the purpose of Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above is to let the people of Taiwan see what the land we live on is like now, let everyone take a good look at Taiwan, and care for our homeland. I wanted to share what I saw from the air with everyone."

In 2014, the Foundation wanted to continue to show viewers the beauty of Taiwan and held public service screenings in Tainan and Changhua, using a large screen to show the film to more people. We also sponsored the Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above Concert at the Taipei Arena, hoping to plant hopes and visions for Taiwan and awaken environmental awareness and care for the land of Taiwan.
