The terraced fields of Gongliao are situated in the foot of the mountains of the northern section of Xueshan mountain range. They are a rare, mosaic landscape in Taiwan. The lives of the people in Gongliao are closely tied with rice farming. The Hsiao family has been farmers for generations and has been working the fields in Gongliao for 200 years. Compared to other farmers in Taiwan, the Hsiao family does not farm wide open fields. The rice paddies of the Hsiao family are located on the steep hills of Neiliaoshan. Hsiao Chun-Yi is 53 years old and the second son of the Hsiao family. Hsiao Chun-Yi and his older brother, Hsiao Chun-Po, are the guardians of the rice paddies that have been passed down through generations. The traditional farming knowledge of the Hsiao family has been passed down from father to son. Their methods adhere to the laws of nature and are friendly to the environment. With climate change and the loss of biodiversity around the world, farming methods must also change. What solutions do these farmers have to offer?
